In Simple Words: Maharashtra has 25+ government scholarship schemes — for SC, ST, OBC, NT, VJNT, SBC, minorities, students with disabilities, general category merit students, and children of ex-servicemen. Most applications are on the MahaDBT portal. The documents you need (income certificate, caste validity) take months to collect — start in May–June before the July–September application window opens.

Maharashtra offers one of India’s largest state scholarship ecosystems. Applications are primarily through mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in (MahaDBT portal). Some central government schemes use the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.

⚠️ Most common mistake: Starting to collect documents only after the scholarship portal opens. An income certificate takes 7–15 days and a Caste Validity Certificate can take 3–6 months. Start in May–June, before the portal opens.

Documents Required for Most Scholarships

Prepare these before the portal opens:

Bank Account — Critical Requirement

All scholarship money is sent via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the student’s bank account. Two things must be true:

  1. Account must be in the student’s name only — not joint, not parents’
  2. Aadhaar must be seeded (NPCI linked) to the account at your bank

If Aadhaar seeding is missing, the money will not arrive even after scholarship approval. Visit your bank and ask for “Aadhaar seeding.”

Scholarship schemes and eligibility criteria change annually. Always verify the latest details on mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in.

Common Questions

Can I apply for multiple scholarships at the same time?
Some schemes cannot be combined — for example, you cannot receive two state government scholarships simultaneously. Check the terms of each scheme. Central and state government scholarships can usually be received together.
I missed the scholarship deadline this year. Can I apply next year?
Yes — most scholarships open every academic year. Mark the deadline dates for next year (typically July–September) and apply as early as possible. Getting your income certificate and caste validity ready before the window opens is key.
My college is not registered on MahaDBT. What can I do?
Contact your college's accounts or scholarship department. They need to register the institute on the portal — it is the college's responsibility, not yours. Escalate to your principal if the department is unresponsive.
I received scholarship money last year but nothing this year despite approval. Why?
Check if your Aadhaar is still linked to the same active bank account. NPCI seeding can lapse if the bank account becomes dormant. Visit your bank to refresh the Aadhaar-account link.
How much money does the Post-Matric Scholarship give?
The scholarship covers your actual tuition fees (paid directly to college) plus a maintenance allowance. The maintenance allowance ranges from ₹150–₹1,200 per month depending on whether you are a day scholar or hostel resident, and your course level.
My scholarship was approved but I did not receive the money. What should I do?
The most common reason is Aadhaar not linked to your bank account (NPCI seeding). Visit your bank branch and ask them to do 'Aadhaar seeding' — link your Aadhaar number to your account. This takes 2–5 working days to reflect.
What is the difference between MahaDBT and MahaEschol portals?
MahaDBT (mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in) is the main Maharashtra government portal for most scholarship schemes. MahaEschol (mahaeschol.maharashtra.gov.in) is specifically used for some school and post-matric scholarship applications. Check which portal your specific scheme uses — most current schemes are on MahaDBT.
