In Simple Words: Getting your School Leaving Certificate (TC) is usually straightforward — most schools issue it free within 7 days. But the documents you need depend on whether you are a current student, a former student wanting a duplicate, someone whose school is closed, or someone whose TC needs correction. Use the right checklist below for your situation.

Important Tips

  1. Apply in writing. Verbal requests can be ignored. A written application creates a paper trail.

  2. Keep an acknowledgement copy. Get a stamped acknowledgement of your application — this protects you if the school delays.

  3. Make 5–6 photocopies. As soon as you receive the original TC, make multiple photocopies. Submit photocopies to government offices; keep originals safely.

  4. Get a digital scan. Scan your TC and store in DigiLocker / Google Drive / email — this protects against physical loss.

  5. Verify caste entry. If the caste column is blank or wrong, fix it before applying for caste certificate or scholarship — fixing later is much harder.

  6. For inter-state use: Always ask if the receiving institution requires counter-signature from Education Officer.

  7. Schools cannot legally refuse TC for fee disputes. Know your rights under RTE Act 2009 and Maharashtra Education Rules.

Common Questions

Do I need to pay any fees to my school for a TC?
Most government and aided schools issue TC free of charge. Private schools may charge ₹100–₹500 as administrative fee. However, no school can legally withhold TC over fee disputes — only the fee for the TC itself can be charged.
What if I don't have any old school documents but I want a duplicate TC?
Visit your school first — they have records in their school register. If you genuinely have no documents, an affidavit declaring your attendance period and class details, along with your Aadhaar card, is usually sufficient. The school will search their register and issue based on what they find.
I lost my marksheets too. Will the school still issue TC?
Yes. The TC is based on the school's internal register, not on your copy of marksheets. Submit a written application, notarised affidavit declaring originals are lost, and your Aadhaar. School will verify from their register and issue TC.
How long does it take to receive the TC after applying?
Maharashtra state rules require schools to issue TC within 7 working days of a written application. In practice, government schools take 7–15 days, private schools take 3–7 days. Duplicate TCs take 15–30 days. If a school exceeds these timelines without reason, escalate to the BEO.
Will I get a Marathi or English TC?
Maharashtra State Board (MSBSHSE) schools typically issue TCs in Marathi and English (bilingual). CBSE / ICSE schools issue in English. For inter-state or international use, an English version is preferred — request specifically.
