In Simple Words: A ration card in Maharashtra does two things — it lets you buy subsidised food grain from your local Fair Price Shop (ration shop), and it also works as a government-recognised address and identity proof. Every family can have one. Which colour card you get depends on your family’s annual income.
Maharashtra has over 1.5 crore ration card holders. All ration card services — new application, member addition, name correction, status check — are handled through the rcms.mahafood.gov.in portal run by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection.
⚠️ Most common mistake: Applying for the wrong category card. Your card colour (Yellow / Orange / White / Antyodaya) is determined by your annual family income. If you apply with no income proof or wrong income details, you will be assigned the wrong category and miss out on the correct subsidy. Always attach a valid income certificate.
Ration Card Types in Maharashtra
| Card Colour | Who Gets It | Annual Family Income |
|---|---|---|
| Antyodaya (AAY) | Poorest of the poor — destitute, landless labourers | No income criterion — based on poverty status |
| Yellow (BPL) | Below Poverty Line families | Below ₹15,000 per year (rural) / ₹21,000 (urban) |
| Orange (APL) | Above Poverty Line — middle income | ₹15,000–₹1,00,000 per year |
| White (APL) | Higher income families — no subsidy | Above ₹1,00,000 per year |
The Yellow and Antyodaya cards get the highest subsidised grain. Orange cards get moderate subsidy. White cardholders pay near-market rates.
