In Simple Words: Applying for a new ration card in Maharashtra takes about 20 minutes online. You fill a form on the government portal, upload your documents, and a field officer or your local ration shop dealer verifies your address. Your card is ready in 2–4 weeks if everything is correct.

Before You Start

Collect these documents before opening the portal:

⚠️ Most common mistake: Starting the application without an income certificate. If you don’t upload one, your card will be classified as White (no subsidy). Getting the income certificate first adds 7–15 days but ensures you get the right card type.

Step-by-Step: Apply Online

Step 1 — Open the portal

Go to rcms.mahafood.gov.in. Click “New Ration Card Application” from the homepage menu.

Step 2 — Select your district and taluka

Choose your district, then your taluka from the dropdown. This routes your application to the correct supply office.

Step 3 — Enter head of family details

Fill in:

Step 4 — Add all family members

Click “Add Member” for each person to be included. You will need each person’s Aadhaar number and their relationship to the head of family (spouse, son, daughter, parent, etc.).

Step 5 — Enter address details

Provide your complete current address. Select your Fair Price Shop (ration shop) from the list — this is the shop where you will collect grain. If you don’t know which shop serves your area, ask your neighbour or look at an existing ration card from your locality.

Step 6 — Upload documents

Upload scanned copies or clear photos of:

Each file must be under 500KB. If your scans are large, compress them at ilovepdf.com or similar.

Step 7 — Submit and note your Application ID

After submitting, you will get an Application ID (e.g., RC/MH/XXXXXX). Save this. You will use it to track status.

If stuck at “Pending at FPS dealer”: Visit your local ration shop and ask the dealer to approve your application. This is a very common delay — dealers don’t always check the portal proactively.

Common Questions

I don't have an income certificate. Can I still apply for a ration card?
You can submit the application, but without an income certificate the system may assign you a White (APL) card by default. To get a Yellow or Orange card you need an income certificate. Apply for one first at Aaple Sarkar — it takes 7–15 days.
My Aadhaar address is different from where I actually live. Will my application be rejected?
Not necessarily — you can use a local address proof (electricity bill, rent agreement, property tax receipt) even if your Aadhaar shows a different address. The supply office verifies your actual residence, not just your Aadhaar address.
I submitted the application 3 weeks ago and there is no update. What should I do?
Log in to rcms.mahafood.gov.in and check your application status. If it shows 'Pending at FPS dealer', your Fair Price Shop dealer needs to confirm your address — visit them in person and remind them. If it shows 'Pending at Tehsildar', wait a few more days or visit the supply office.
Can a tenant apply for a ration card?
Yes. A rent agreement (rent receipt) is accepted as address proof. You do not need to own property to get a ration card.
Does every family member need to be on the same ration card?
Yes — all family members living at the same address should be on the same ration card. You can add or remove members later if your family situation changes.
