EWS Certificate Eligibility in Maharashtra – Who Qualifies and Who Doesn't

In Simple Words: To get an EWS Certificate you must be General category (not SC/ST/OBC) AND your family income must be under β‚Ή8 lakh per year AND your family must not own too much land or property. All three conditions must be met together β€” failing even one means you don’t qualify.

⚠️ Most common mistake: Assuming that income below β‚Ή8 lakh alone makes you eligible. EWS has three separate conditions β€” caste, income, AND property limits. You must meet all three. Many families are disqualified by the land or property condition even when income qualifies.

The 3 Conditions You Must Meet

Condition 1 β€” Caste

You must belong to the General/Unreserved category.

EWS is specifically for people who do not have any other reservation benefit. If you belong to:

…you already have reservation benefits and are not eligible for EWS.

Condition 2 β€” Family Income

Your total family income from all sources must be below β‚Ή8 lakh per year.

What counts as income:

Family means: yourself, your spouse, your parents, and minor children living together.

Condition 3 β€” Family Property (All 4 must be satisfied)

Property TypeMaximum Allowed
Agricultural landLess than 5 acres
Residential flatLess than 1000 sq ft
Residential plot in municipalityLess than 100 sq yards
Residential plot outside municipalityLess than 200 sq yards

Your family must be within all four limits β€” not just one or two.

Common Eligibility Questions

Q: My income is β‚Ή7 lakh but I own 6 acres of farmland. Am I eligible? No. The land exceeds 5 acres, so you do not qualify even if income is below β‚Ή8 lakh.

Q: I am General category but my wife is OBC. Can I apply? You may be eligible based on your own category, but your family income (including your wife’s) is counted. Check with your Tehsildar.

Q: My father owns a house of 1200 sq ft. Am I eligible? No. The residential property exceeds 1000 sq ft limit β€” the family is not eligible.

Q: I belong to General category and earn β‚Ή5 lakh. My family owns no land. Am I eligible? Yes β€” assuming the residential property is also within limits.

Q: Is EWS only for Hindus? No. EWS reservation applies to all General category citizens regardless of religion.

What Happens at Verification

The Tehsildar officer will verify:

Be prepared with documents for all three conditions.

Common Questions

My income is β‚Ή6 lakh but my father owns 6 acres of farmland. Am I eligible?
No. Agricultural land exceeds the 5 acres limit. All three conditions must be met together β€” income, caste, and property. Failing any one condition means you are not eligible.
My family owns a flat of 800 sq ft and 3 acres of land. Income is β‚Ή5 lakh. Are we eligible?
Yes β€” all conditions are met: General category, income below β‚Ή8 lakh, flat below 1000 sq ft, and land below 5 acres.
I am a convert from SC to General category religion-wise. Am I eligible for EWS?
EWS eligibility is based on your officially recognised caste category in government records, not religion. If your official caste record still shows SC, you are not eligible for EWS. Consult your Tehsildar for clarity on your specific situation.
