In Simple Words: A Caste Certificate is issued by the Tehsildar / Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and proves you belong to a specific caste category (SC, ST, OBC, NT, VJNT, SBC, or minority). It is the first step — different from the Caste Validity Certificate. Most rejections happen because of missing old family documents or unclear caste entries. Use the checklist below to gather everything before applying.

The exact documents required depend on the caste category. Below is the complete checklist for the most common cases.

Mandatory Documents (All Applicants — All Categories)

These are needed for every caste certificate application in Maharashtra:

Caste Proof Documents (Pick the Strongest You Have)

You need to submit at least one strong primary proof. Multiple documents strengthen your application.

Strongest Primary Proofs (Use Whichever You Have)

Secondary Proofs (Use When Primary Is Unavailable)

Common Questions

I am applying for my child but the family caste document is in my grandfather's name. Is that okay?
Yes. The Caste Certificate is issued based on the family's caste history. Documents in your father's or grandfather's name (showing the same caste) are accepted as primary proof of caste. The lineage is what matters, not just the current applicant's name.
Do I absolutely need my grandfather's old caste document?
Not always, but it is the strongest evidence. If you don't have it, you can submit your father's caste certificate, school TC with caste entry, old land records, or family caste affidavit from the village. The older the document, the stronger your case.
What if my caste is not mentioned on my school TC?
Apply to your school to add the caste to your records (with family caste proof). If the school refuses or has closed, you will need to rely on older family documents. The Tehsildar may also accept an affidavit from a Sarpanch or village elders confirming your family's caste.
Can I apply for a Caste Certificate online?
Yes. Apply through the Aaple Sarkar portal (aaplesarkar.mahaonline.gov.in). The certificate is digitally signed and valid for all government purposes including admissions, jobs, and scholarship applications.
How long does the Caste Certificate take?
Typically 15–30 working days from the date of application. Some districts process faster (7–15 days) if all documents are in order. Note: this is the Caste Certificate, not the Caste Validity Certificate — the latter takes 3–6 months.
